Diabetes Melitus is defined as a “condition where the body’s pancreas has lost its ability to produce insulin, a hormone active in blood sugar regulation and in fat storage”. For those of you who do not know, there are 2 types of Diabetes. There is Type I which occurs early in life (as an infant) and is commonly known as Juvenile Diabetes. Then there is Type II which occurs later in life but can also be seen as early as the teenage years.
Insulin Resistance (IR) is widely observed as the principal precipitating factor in late onset Diabetes Melitus II (DM2) which is noted by an excess of the insulin hormone, referred to as hyper-insulinism, or hyper-insulinemia by others. Type I Diabetes on the other hand suffers from an absence of insulin.
Ok, enough scientific jargon, the point of the matter is diabetes is definitely a life threatening condition if not treated early. And it often starts with being insulin resistant.
